Our founder President John
Ernest Grosvenor M.B.E. J.P. was born on November
1st 1887, and had a distinguished record as an industrialist,
civic leader, sportsman, soldier, magistrate and clergyman.
Mr Grosvenor took Holy Orders in 1947 after more than
40 years in the carpet industry, many of those as Chairman
and Managing Director of Woodward Grosvenor Co Ltd.
He succeeded his father as head of Woodward Grosvenor
shortly after returning from the First World War.
As a founder member of the Rotary Club of Kidderminster,
he was an obvious candidate to be chosen as the Club's
first President.
For more than 40 years Mr Grosvenor was a governor
of King Charles
I Grammar School. In 1962 he gave the school
investments worth more than £1000 to provide an
income for the benefit of boys going to universities
and travelling abroad.
He was educated at Harrow, and after retiring from
business in 1946 he underwent his theological studies
for entry into Anglican ministry.
His dedication to community work and civic duties was
admirable to say the least. As well as the positions
of office already mentioned Mr Grosvenor was Mayor of
Kidderminster in 1926, High Sheriff of Worcestershire,
President of Kidderminster's Carpet Manufacturers Association,
Chamber of Commerce, Choral Society and a prominent
Freemason.
Sadly Mr Grosvenor died in February 1963 at the age
of 76 years.
